Winter Weather Reminders and Resources for Members

Several recent weather systems have brought cold temperatures, ice, and snow to many parts of the United States, including areas of the south where this type of weather is not common. NATCA would like to take this time to remind our members of some resources and best practices during these winter months from the OSHA Committee, and the Disaster Response Committee.

The Disaster Response Committee:

The DRC is not just here for hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires. We can help during unpredictable snowstorms too. Power outages, water leaks, and prolonged heat loss are just some of the instances in which we can assist. Please reach out via (833) NATCADRC or [email protected].

OSHA Committee’s Space Heater Safety Reminders:

Portable space heaters are a great option to supplement central heating systems, but due to the high-risk potential of causing a fire, the industry has strong safety guidelines regarding the use of personal space heaters.

Here are a few examples of the safety guidelines regarding personal space heaters:

  • Electric heaters must be labeled and listed by the National Recognized Testing. Laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratory (UL) and be free of any recalls.
  • They must be equipped with safety features such as tip over cut off, thermostatic controls, over-temperature limit control, and automatic shutoff.
  • They must be placed on the floor at least 36 inches from combustible materials and not placed under a desk.
  • When in use, the electric heater must be plugged directly into a wall socket not an extension cord or surge protector multi-outlet strip.
