FAA WorkLife Wisdom: Becoming More Resilient
When life makes it tough to bounce back, you need to be resilient. Resiliency will help you through life’s challenges. While it’s not always easy to process the various trials that you’ll endure in life and work, the good news is that you can take practical steps to learn how to be more resilient in the future.
Be patient with yourself. When a big challenge appears in your life, remember that even the most resilient of people need a little time to process a new reality.
Make a plan for action. Write down potential solutions to your challenges. Go over your list and weigh your options. Think about which solution has the best outcome. Once you pick a solution create a step-by-step plan for taking action. This will keep your thoughts organized and you on track to resolve the issue.
Find a sense of purpose in your life. Figure out what your values are and live by those. If you have a favorite charity, spiritual practice, or meaningful activities try to devote a portion of your time to that. This will help you feel good and give you a purpose in everyday life.
Stay flexible. When you realize that there are many things you can change unexpectedly, and there are many moving parts within problems. You may have to modify or drop your original plan in order to adapt to new circumstances. Embrace change when it comes and it’ll be easier to adapt.
Look for the humor in all situations. Try to find some silver lining in even the worst of circumstances. Laugh when you can. Humor is healthy!
Take care of yourself during tough times. When you’re going through a challenge in life, it’s easy to forget about and let yourself go. Make time for activities that you enjoy; this will help you cope during trials. Use relaxation techniques that’ll reduce your stress. Have an exercise routine that you keep up with regularly.
There’s light at the end of the tunnel. No matter how difficult or uncomfortable a situation may be, remember that even the darkest of days won’t last forever.
