NATCA Hosts Advanced Legislative Activism Training (ALAT), Preparing Members for Legislative Advocacy
NATCA hosted its latest Advanced Legislative Activism Training (ALAT) session from Oct. 2-4, at the National Office in Washington. The training was led by National Legislative Committee (NLC) Vice Chair Allison Schwaegel (St. Louis ATCT, STL) and NLC Southwest Region Representative Corey Soignet (Houston Intercontinental ATCT, IAH), equipping members with essential skills to effectively advocate for NATCA’s legislative priorities on Capitol Hill.
This session welcomed NATCA members from across several regions, providing two days of in-depth instruction followed by a day on Capitol Hill, where attendees put their training into action by meeting with congressional representatives to discuss key issues impacting NATCA and the air traffic control profession.
ALAT dives into crucial topics such as the Hatch Act, FAA funding, and the pathways to navigating the legislative landscape. Participants explore NATCA’s legislative history and activism strategies, learning how to build impactful relationships with members of Congress to further NATCA’s mission. Instructors from NATCA’s Government Affairs Department and legal counsel brought their expertise to the class, and participants were also briefed by the U.S. Office of Special Counsel on legal considerations in legislative work.
For those interested in joining future sessions, NATCA offers both Legislative Activism Training (LAT) and the more advanced ALAT for graduates of LAT. Visit natca.org/academy to learn more and register.
