NATCA Members Elevate Legislative Advocacy Skills in Advanced Training on Capitol Hill
In August the National Office in Washington hosted a group of dedicated NATCA members for the Advanced Legislative Activism Training (ALAT) course, led by NATCA Academy instructors: National Legislative Committee (NLC) Southwest Region Representative Corey Soignet (Houston Intercontinental ATCT, IAH), Northwest Mountain Region NLC Alternate Matt Scala (Denver TRACON, D01), and Paul Behan (Jacksonville Center, ZJX). This intensive course is designed for NATCA members who are active in legislative advocacy and want to sharpen their skills to become even more effective in representing the union’s interests on Capitol Hill.
The ALAT course offers participants advanced training in techniques for conducting Congressional meetings, proper etiquette for attending events with members of Congress, and strategic approaches to advocating for NATCA’s goals. As part of their education, training includes two days of classroom instruction and a day in the Congressional office buildings and the connecting tunnels on Capitol Hill, where participants prepare to put their new skills into practice for future engagement with members of Congress and their staff.
One highlight of this ALAT session was a special invitation from U.S. Rep. Aaron Bean (Fla.-4), who hosted the group for a tour of the U.S. Capitol, led by his staff. This unique opportunity allowed NATCA members to visit the House floor as part of the tour, experiencing the legislative environment up close and reinforcing the importance of their advocacy work.
For those interested in enhancing their legislative activism skills, the ALAT course is an invaluable resource. Members can sign up for ALAT or its prerequisite course — Legislative Activism Training (LAT) — today at natca.org/academy to start making a difference in NATCA’s legislative efforts.
