NATCA Member Attends Congresswoman Caraveo Labor Roundtable
NATCA National Legislative Committee Northwest Mountain Alternate Representative Matt Scala (Denver TRACON, D01) attended a Labor Roundtable hosted by Colorado Congresswoman Yadira Caraveo, along with several other local union representatives at the Sheetmetal Workers Local #9 in Denver. Caraveo shared her background as an organizer and delegate for Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Caraveo serves on the House Committee on Science Space & Technology.
Caraveo asked all the union representatives to share their federal legislative priorities and told Scala she is eager to learn specifically about NATCA’s priorities for FAA Reauthorization.
“I explained that we are recovering from a 28-year low in controller staffing that had its origins in 1981,” Scala said. Scala talked about how the white book, waves of controllers reaching retirement age, the government shutdown, and COVID-19 halting training have contributed to the staffing issue. “I also shared that NATCA and the FAA are working collaboratively on more accurate target staffing numbers.”
