WASHINGTON – The National Air Traffic Controllers Association today proudly celebrates a quarter century of keeping America’s airspace system the safest in the world.

After a long battle to restore their collective voice in the workplace and for safety issues, air traffic controllers voted to approve NATCA as their sole bargaining agent on June 11, 1987. Eight days later, the Federal Labor Relations Authority certified NATCA as a union.

NATCA now represents more than 20,000 aviation safety professionals. They have the safest record in history, guiding 70,000 flights a day and 700 million passengers each year.

“It’s an honor and privilege to represent the highly skilled and fiercely dedicated men and women of this great union on its 25th anniversary,” said NATCA President Paul Rinaldi. “NATCA has achieved so much since its certification. Nothing has come easily or without sacrifice. We are proud to continue to serve the public and we thank everyone who has supported NATCA throughout its first 25 years. Today is a very special day.”

“Twenty five years ago today NATCA pioneers saw the culmination of their fight to restore a voice to the air traffic control profession. Today, we celebrate that success, honor their dedication and look forward to another 25 years of achievements,” said NATCA Executive Vice President Trish Gilbert.
