NATCA Awaits DOT/FAA Data About Chicago TRACON - (9/20/2000)

WASHINGTON - In reaction to an announcement by the Federal Aviation Administration concerning discipline of air traffic controllers at Chicago TRACON, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association is taking a "wait and see" approach.

"NATCA has been told that the FAA has completed its internal investigation concerning the delays and cancellations on July 17 in the Chicago area," NATCA President John Carr said.

"We have not seen the FAA's report on these events, and we choose not to draw any conclusions based on a one-sided investigation."

"Air traffic control is extraordinarily stressful," Carr said, "and the work in Chicago is particularly so. The work controllers do involves constant vigilance, split second decision making and independent thinking to ensure the absolute safety of the flying public. We know the controllers involved have maintained those very high standards at all times."
