This Week's Notebook: NATCA Mourns Loss of Original Article 48 Rep Dave Rudolf
Friday, May 24, 2013

One of NATCA’s original Article 48 Representatives, Dave Rudolf passed away this week.

He was the first Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) representative for NATCA.

“His outstanding work ethic and a personality that made everyone feel at ease were a combination that all NATCA members benefited from,” NATCA Director of Safety and Technology Dale Wright said. “He was a great guy who did an outstanding job for our members. Even in retirement and working as a contractor he protected the controllers. He was a great friend of mine and he will be missed terribly.”

Mr. Rudolf  worked at Timmerman Field (MWC) and Milwaukee (MKE) in his FAA career. He retired out of MKE several years ago

Help Support ZAU Brother With Leave Donation, Contribution to American Cancer Society

Joe Boyle has been an air traffic controller at Chicago Center (ZAU) for 22 years and has been a career-long dedicated NATCA member. Prior to joining the FAA, he served for over eight years in the United States Coast Guard. Currently, Joe is fighting a tough battle against Stage 4 metastatic cancer. He was diagnosed in January of this year.

Although his medical clearance has been temporarily suspended during his treatment, he continues to work as much as possible in the training department. He is almost out of leave and is entering the VLTP (leave donation) program.

Joe has worked the boards in ZAU’s Northwest Area for his entire career, serving a term as the area’s alternate NATCA representative and on ZAU’s executive board as Treasurer. He grew up in the Chicago area and is a huge Bears and White Sox fan as well as a big supporter of the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Coincidentally, he and his wife Stephanie were married over 27 years ago on the day the Bears won the Super Bowl. Joe and Stephanie have three children; Michael, who will enter eighth grade in the fall, Natalie, who will be a senior in high school and Joey who will enter his sophomore year at Notre Dame in the fall.

Joey has decided to run the Chicago Marathon this fall as part of the American Cancer Society Team. He has dedicated his first marathon to his Dad. The ZAU Executive Board passed a resolution to sponsor Joey’s endeavor. They will purchase all necessary items to run the marathon; i.e., registration fees, shoes and other gear. You can see Joey’s page HERE.

“Joe is one of the toughest fighters and staunchest Union brothers you will ever meet,” ZAU Facility Representative Toby Hauck said. “Now is the time for his NATCA brothers and sisters to help him in his fight. You can donate leave to Joe via the leave donation program and/or you can donate to the American Cancer Society via Joey’s page by going to the link (above).”
