This Week's News and Notes: NATCA in Washington Registration Open
Thursday, March 21, 2013

NATCA in Washington (NIW) 2013 is just around the corner and it's shaping up to be one of the most important and timely NIW events in the history of NATCA. The event will be held May 20-22, and registration is now open. To register online, go to Registration closes Friday, April 12.

Participants will be selected based on the Congressional districts in which they reside. It's ideal to have as many Congressional districts represented as possible. If you are unsure of your leave time, please register anyway, as it's easier to cancel a hotel reservation than add registrants last minute. Attendance confirmations will be sent out Monday, April 15.

"NATCA in Washington is our Union's premier legislative event," said NATCA Executive Vice President Trish Gilbert in her weekly update. "If you haven’t attended before, you will find it very enlightening to learn about our legislative process from the grassroots perspective. Nobody can explain our jobs and our issues to Congress better than us. This is an excellent opportunity to get involved and make a difference. I look forward to seeing everyone in DC."

New Partnership for Safety MOU

NATCA Safety Committee Chair Steve Hansen, Eastern Regional Vice President Phil Barbarello and ATO Vice President of Safety & Training Joseph Teixeira signed a new Partnership For Safety MOU that mandates every facility establish a local safety council consisting of one NATCA member and one FAA management official. The order took effect March 5.

"This is so important because it's all about local union and management working together to resolve safety issues and sharing that information with the rest of the country," said Safety Committee Chair Steve Hansen. "This MOU is a big step in our movement towards making the National Airspace System (NAS) the safest and most efficient in the world."

NATCA Mention in Mercy Flights E-Newsletter

Mercy Flight Southeast again attended NATCA's Communicating for Safety' conference earlier this month and included a mention of the conference in its e-newsletter:

"It should be noted that even though the United States is (the) busiest, most complex airspace in the world, it is also the safest. In fact, 2012 was the safest year on record since 1945.

"Our charity represented the Air Charity Network, spreading the word among our nations controllers, signing up new pilots and accepting a donation from NATCA charitable as the 'Charity of Choice.'"
