NATCA to Use New Simulator at Events, for Education
NATCA President Paul Rinaldi (above and below) tries out the new mobile tower site simulator.
NATCA on Wednesday was excited to receive a new mobile tower site simulator on loan from Adacel Systems, Inc. The simulator, on display at this week’s 57th Annual Air Traffic Control Association (ATCA) Conference and Exhibition at National Harbor, Md., gives NATCA a great new way to demonstrate for pilots, the rest of the aviation community and the public how controllers do their jobs.
“For somebody like a pilot at Oshkosh (annual Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture fly-in) or at the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) Aviation Summit, we can really show them what it’s like for us,” Safety Committee Chairman Steve Hansen said. “It’s pretty cool.”
The simulator is portable enough to ship anywhere easily. Hansen said it will be on display at Communicating for Safety, March 4-6, 2013 in Las Vegas. It provides not only tower simulation but TRACON and en route as well.
“It’s all about teaching people what we do and giving them a better understanding,” Hansen said.
Jeff Tyrcha, Adacel Vice President of Business Development and Marketing, said the simulator was developed in under a year. It uses existing technology in place with FAA simulators currently used for training in many facilities.
“A lot of times, the jobs of air traffic controllers are mostly unseen by the public and what they do is not well understood,” Tyrcha said. “By bringing this out to the public, it will enhance their knowledge of how difficult air traffic control is.”
