NATCA Prepares for Upcoming 30th Anniversary of PATCO Strike

NATCA is preparing to commemorate the upcoming 30th anniversary of the PATCO strike and remember the sacrifices that were made by the brothers and sisters of PATCO. Over the next two weeks, we'll publish here some recollections from former PATCO members of that time leading up to the events of Aug. 3, 1981.

We also plan to present an excerpt from a book that's about to be published about PATCO, written by Joseph A. McCartin, an associate professor of history at Georgetown University. Mr. McCartin, as part of his vast research for the book, came to the National Office to interview NATCA President Paul Rinaldi, Executive Vice President Trish Gilbert and Executive Director and former President Barry Krasner.

The book is entitled, "Collision Course; Ronald Reagan, the Air Traffic Controllers, and the Strike that Changed America."

Here is a brief description of the book as listed by the publisher, Oxford University Press:

"In August 1981, the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) called an illegal strike. The new president, Ronald Reagan, fired the strikers, establishing a reputation for both prompt resolution and hostility to organized labor. As Joseph A. McCartin writes, the strike was the culmination of two decades of bitter hostility between labor management that stemmed from the high-pressure nature of the job and the controllers' lack of control in the workplace. The fall of PATCO not only ushered in a long period of labor decline; it also served as a harbinger for the current campaign against public sector unions that now roils American politics.
