ANC Controllers Direct Firemen to Blaze
Tuesday, July 12, 2011

On May 22, ANC ATCT controllers directed firemen to a blaze on the Anchorage Hillside, earning them praise in the form of a letter last month from Fire Chief Mark Hall.

The Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) had received a 911 call that morning reporting a brush fire, though the caller was only able to generalize the area in which it was located. Fortunately, through it's contact with NATCA members Brett Baker, Erin Schmidt and Trevor Norsworthy on duty in the tower, the department was able to retrieve the information necessary for the fire rescue. Due to our controllers' quick and helpful response, AFD was able to send its resources to the now-identified Hilltop Ski Area in time to reduce the amount of damage, which had been brought on by Anchorage's dry conditions.
